ADRIAN — The head of a major local health center is sounding the alarm about proposed federal cuts to Medicaid — warning they could jeopardize care for thousands of patients across southeast Michigan.
David Brown, Board Chair of the Family Medical Center of Michigan, says the potential cuts being debated in Congress this month would directly affect care access in Lenawee, Monroe, and surrounding counties. In a statement, Brown says nearly one-third of the center’s 18,400 patients rely on Medicaid, and that the program helps support care for both insured and uninsured individuals.
The Family Medical Center delivers more than 95,000 visits each year, including medical, dental, and behavioral health services. Brown says if federal Medicaid funding is reduced, local clinics could be forced to cut back on staff or services — affecting every patient, not just those enrolled in Medicaid.
The Michigan Hospital Association reports that over 2.6 million Michiganders — about one in four — depend on Medicaid, making the proposed reductions a statewide concern.
