ADRIAN — A local township official is proposing a new strategy to strengthen Lenawee County’s enforcement of its solid waste ordinance: hire a dedicated code compliance officer.

Speaking during Wednesday’s Materials Management Planning Committee meeting, the official referenced how some townships already handle local code enforcement — through designated officers who issue warnings and coordinate with the courts.

Sheriff Troy Bevier said he’s open to the idea but emphasized the importance of drafting a sound legal ordinance and providing proper documentation, saying, quote, “I’d have to see what that looks like. I don’t write ordinances — we just enforce them,” unquote.

Committee members took the suggestion under advisement as they continue to revise the county’s materials management plan.
