ADRIAN Adrian city commissioners celebrated the 25th annual Cinco de Mayo Parade and Fiesta this week, officially declaring May 5 as Cinco de Mayo Day in the city.

A proclamation recognized the late Paul “Chico” Martinez for his decades of leadership in organizing the event and advocating for Adrian’s Latino community.

Mayor Angie Sword Heath read the proclamation and praised Chico’s impact on generations of residents. Commissioners echoed that sentiment, describing him as a force for connection, culture, and pride in Adrian.

Two scholarships were awarded in Chico’s name to local students selected by the parade committee. Commissioner Bob Behnke noted that those funds came directly from the community, showing how deeply Chico’s mission still resonates.

Commissioners encouraged the public to continue supporting the event in Chico’s memory.
