LANSING — Congressman Tim Walberg is backing a bipartisan resolution to recognize May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
Walberg — who co-chairs the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus—joined lawmakers from both parties to introduce the resolution in Washington. He says the warmer weather means more riders are taking to the roads, and drivers need to stay alert.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 6,300 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes last year. Lawmakers say the resolution is meant to remind drivers to “look twice” and promote safe driving practices.
A companion resolution was also introduced in the Senate by Michigan Senator Gary Peters and Iowa Senator Joni Ernst. They say the goal is to support rider education, awareness, and respect on the road.
Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month is observed nationally every May.
