LANSING, Mich. — A new study reveals that Michiganders drank more than 453 million alcoholic drinks over the winter — enough to fill the equivalent of 30 Mackinac Bridges.

The research comes from MyBioSource, which surveyed over 3,000 Americans to map alcohol consumption state by state. While California, Florida, and New York led in total volume, Michigan ranked 27th overall for per capita drinking.

On average, Michigan adults consumed roughly 12 drinks per week during the winter months, totaling more than 40 million gallons statewide.

The study also looked at reasons behind drinking. Nearly half of respondents said they drank mainly for social reasons. Holiday celebrations accounted for another 22%, while stress, boredom, and even staying warm contributed to the numbers.

Wine was the most popular beverage at 34%, followed by beer, spirits, and canned cocktails or seltzers.

The researchers hope the findings spark conversations about responsible consumption and alternative ways to cope with stress.
