ADRIAN, Mich. — Consumers Energy has confirmed that a turkey vulture was responsible for a widespread power outage on Friday morning.

Company spokesperson Brian Wheeler said the bird flew into the power lines, disrupting service for customers in the area. After surveying the scene, Consumers crews found the dead bird near damaged equipment, helping confirm the cause of the outage.

Crews were dispatched quickly and worked throughout the day to restore power to affected customers. Wheeler said while animal-related outages aren’t uncommon, large birds like turkey vultures can cause more significant damage due to their size and wingspan.

Consumers Energy reminds customers to report any lingering service issues as restoration efforts continue.
