ADRIAN, Mich. Michigan just gave its building standards a major energy upgrade.

The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs marked Earth Day by adopting new residential energy codes designed to make homes more efficient, more affordable, and more comfortable in any weather.

The update goes into effect in 120 days.

It covers everything from insulation and window quality to energy-efficient appliances. That means less heat leaking out, less energy wasted, and lower utility bills for homeowners.

Commercial building codes were updated in December. Those went into effect this week.

The changes are backed by two statewide coalitions made up of nearly 170 housing, energy, and environmental groups.

Tony Sirna with Evergreen Action says, “Modernizing Michigan’s building codes is a win for families across the state. It means lower monthly energy bills, cleaner air to breathe, and stronger protections against extreme weather.”

Supporters say it’s a smart move for the economy too, backing an energy efficiency industry that already supports 80,000 jobs statewide.
