Charlene L. Byers – Manitou Beach

CHARLENE L. “Gramcracker” BYERS, age 86 years of Manitou Beach, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at her home. She was born on July 28, 1938 in Hudson, the daughter of Charles W. and Lucille N. (Hanlin) DeLine. She graduated from Hudson High School in 1956 and then to nursing school to become a RN. She worked at Thorn Hospital in Hudson, Bixby Hospital in Adrian and the retired from Duane L. Waters Hospital in Jackson as a nursing supervisor.

Charlene married Donald L. Byers on April 21, 1963, at the Hudson First Baptist Church and he preceded her in death on January 15, 2013. She enjoyed volunteering at the free clinic in Hillsdale and with meals on wheels. Charlene loved to knit prayer blankets, slippers, mittens and hats for anyone who needed them. She was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Charlene is survived by her daughter, Amy (Kevin) Hammill, granddaughter, Erin (Daryl) Young, 5 great-grandchildren, Dakota, Braden (Brie), Shoshana (Jarrod), Piper and Cassidy, a great-great-grandchild, Kiani. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Joseph Byers, parents and sister, Barbara (Jim) Briggs.

Cremation has taken place and no public services are being planned at this time. A private family interment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson. A Celebration of Life is being planned for later this summer for Charlene and Donald.
