ADRIAN, Mich. — Each April, pinwheels appear outside schools and community buildings across Lenawee County as part of the national “Pinwheels for Prevention” campaign, reminding us that every child deserves a safe, healthy, and nurturing upbringing.
Among those leading this work locally is Kelly Shiels, Truancy Prevention Specialist at the Lenawee Intermediate School District. With more than two decades in child welfare, Kelly has continued her advocacy through her work with the Child Abuse Prevention Team.
Shiels said, “Prevention and providing services to families is extremely important to me. I continue to participate with the Child Abuse Prevention team to raise awareness in the community.”
Kelly helps bridge the LISD with the Department of Health and Human Services, ensuring schools stay connected to vital resources and support for families.
The pinwheel has become a national symbol for preventing child abuse and neglect, and in Lenawee, it reflects the efforts of leaders like Shiels working every day to create a better future for kids.
