
Adrian, Michigan – Philip Ernest Hughes, age 96, died Tuesday, March 25th, 2025 at Lenawee Medical Care Facility.
Phil was born on November 3rd, 1928, in Hudson, Michigan to Ernest and Eileen (Nies) Hughes. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Adrian and later attended the University of Dayton and the University of Toledo. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at U.S. Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan. On August 6th, 1966, he married Nell Ann Johnston at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Adrian. Phil spent his entire career working at Typewriter Sales and Service. From sweeping floors during high school to managing The Bookstore in the ‘60’s to over 30 years on North Main Street, he was always there to help. Phil continued to support the community and people that he cared for in his retirement – first as his wife Ann founded the Adrian Area Chamber of Commerce, and later when she started Ann’s By Design. He loved retail and downtown Adrian, as well as summers on Round Lake, time spent with family, and the Church.
Phil is survived by his two sons, Philip (Kimberly) of Ann Arbor and Matthew (Heather) of Manitou Beach; four grandchildren, Brandon (Janey), Claire, Alexander and Isaac; one great grandson, Harvey; and several nieces and nephews, the Condon kids. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Katherine (Condon), his brothers Norman and Gerald, and his wife of 55 years, Ann.
The funeral liturgy will be offered at 10:30am, March 31, 2025, at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary Campus, Father Michael Newman presiding. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:30am – 10:30 am prior to the service.
