Detroit, MI – Adrian High School’s Unified Basketball Team recently had the unique opportunity to compete at Little Caesars Arena as part of the 4th Annual Detroit Pistons Unified Showcase. The team took the court against Warren Woods Tower, in a basketball game that highlighted the values of teamwork, inclusion, and the power of unified sports.
For the students, playing at Little Caesars Arena was an exciting experience. They had the chance to step onto the same court as the professionals, creating lasting memories. Longtime APS announcer and past Adrian Public Schools Board Member Jed Engle also participated as the guest announcer, adding a familiar touch to the event.
“It was an incredible experience for our students to play on an NBA court,” said Melanie Nightingale, Special Education Teacher and Unified Champion Schools Liaison/Coach. “Getting to compete in an arena like this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them. These events show just how meaningful unified sports can be, creating opportunities that extend far beyond the game itself.”
Following their game, students had the opportunity to stay and watch the Detroit Pistons play the Oklahoma City Thunder. They were also given a Unified Showcase Winter Beanie, and a donation was made to the Adrian Unified Program to help support future opportunities for student-athletes.
Adrian Public Schools Athletic Director Chad O’Brien highlighted the importance of inclusive athletics. “Sports should be for everyone, and unified programs make that possible,” O’Brien said. “These students are learning leadership, teamwork, and perseverance—values that matter both on and off the court. It was great to see them take part in such a unique event. ”
In preparation for their game at Little Caesars Arena, the Adrian Unified Basketball Team had previously hosted Tecumseh Unified Basketball for a halftime showcase. As a part of the Winterfest festivities, the team played an inter-squad scrimmage with a large portion of community members in attendance. The team also participated in an additional game against the Adrian High School staff on March 4, which was attended by the entire high school student body and staff. These games highlight the importance of providing all students with opportunities to compete and grow through athletics.
Adrian’s participation in the Unified Showcase is part of the school’s ongoing commitment to Project Unify and Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools, which brings together students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their peers through sports and social activities. The program is now in its 11th year at Adrian High School, and Adrian is also celebrating 10 years as a Unified Champion School through Special Olympics Michigan, recognizing its dedication to fostering inclusion. Adrian Public School is continuing to explore the expansion of the unified programs offered to students.
Adrian High School Principal Sam Skeels emphasized the dedication of staff and volunteers in making these opportunities possible. “This kind of experience doesn’t happen without the hard work of our teachers, coaches, and support staff who believe in the power of inclusion,” Skeels said. “Their commitment to giving every student a chance to shine is what makes Adrian a special place, and we are incredibly proud of the work they do every day.”
