Adrian, MI – The owner of the former Adrian Mall has been given a deadline to demolish a section of the building. At last night’s City Commission meeting, Jay Marks, director of Adrian’s Downtown Development Authority and Main Street program, announced that the city sent a demolition order to the building’s owner, Adrian Development Group, who later sent an appeal.
After further review, an agreement was made to reduce the scope of the demolition order. The portion of the building now scheduled for demolition covers the main entrance and much of the south side next to Ollie’s Bargain Outlet.
Water damage was cited as the main factor causing that portion of the building’s deterioration. Previously, the order was for the entire portion between Ollie’s and Dunham’s Sports, as well as the north end of the building which housed JCPenney.
The main Adrian Mall building was condemned by the city in 2020. In 2023, the Adrian City Planning Commission approved site plans which resulted in the opening of NewLife Church, but no other development has taken place. Adrian Development Group now has until June 4th to demolish the selected property.
