Morenci, MI – The Morenci Fire Department received a report of a structural fire at 234 East Union Street Friday morning at around 4:45 am. Morenci Fire Chief Brad Lonis said in a post on the department’s Facebook page that when crews arrived, heavy smoke conditions were visible from the street side of the house, and that the house was still occupied.
Lonis said that their engine crew immediately started to remove the occupants from the house, while simultaneously attacking the fire. Three adults, with one of them being in a wheelchair, were removed from the home, and transferred to Morenci EMS.
A dog was also removed from the house. All occupants, and the dog, had smoke inhalation. Chief Lonis said that the fire was located in the basement, with extension up the wall into the bathroom on the first floor.
He said that the cause of the fire was because of an overload of the electrical system… several electrical heaters and the oven were being used to heat the house. Lonis said that there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
The Morenci Fire Department was assisted on scene by Lyons Royalton Fire Department, Madison Charter Township Fire Department and Morenci EMS. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family.
