Shirley Sell, age 86, of Blissfield, Michigan, passed away Sunday morning, January 19, 2025, at Wellspring Lutheran Services, Monroe Campus.
Shirley was born on December 10, 1938, at her family home in Palmyra, Michigan. She was one of Albert F. and Louise A. (DeJonghe) VanLoocke’s three children. Shirley attended Blissfield High School and graduated with the Class of 1957. After graduation she went on to attend Stautzenberger college.
On May 13, 1961, she married Marvin “Lid” Larry Sell and for the next 47 years they made a wonderful team. Shirley embraced her role of a farmer’s wife and mother; always making sure everyone was fed, the vegetable garden was weeded, and the freezing and canning was taken care of each season.
Shirley’s nurturing personality was evident at a young age as she helped raise her younger brother, Mike. This experience prepared her for when she and Marv had their children, William and Julie. The family was always busy with farm chores or school activities but found time to relax and go camping, where they made lasting memories. Shirley was a long-time member of Light of Christ Parish, St. Peter the Apostle, in Blissfield, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. In more recent years, Shirley would head south to Zephyrhills, Florida, during the cold winter months. She stayed active golfing, swimming, playing cards with friends and volunteering her time at the Betmar Community Library.
She is survived by her children, William “Bill” (Monica) Sell and Julie Nicolai (Eddie Mann); grandchildren, Amber Nicolai, Jennifer (Jonathon) McEwan, Devin Nicolai and Kyle Sell; great-grandchildren, Bradley McEwan and Matthew James Belkofer; and brothers, Francis VanLoocke and Mike VanLoocke. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Marvin, in 2008.
Memorial visitation for Shirley will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel, in Blissfield, with the Rosary taking place at the start of visitation. On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at 11 a.m. a Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Light of Christ Parish, St. Peter the Apostle, Blissfield with Fr. Jeffrey Poll celebrating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Light of Christ Parish, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.WagleyFuneralHomes.com
