It is with heavy hearts that we share the peaceful passing of Kikue (Tagami) Horikawa on November 19, 2024, at Detroit Medical Center Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township, MI.
Kikue was born on September 22, 1925, in Oxnard, California, and lived on the family farm until the family was interned in the Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona during World War II. She moved to Detroit when she was allowed to leave the Relocation Center and married Tom a few years later. Tom was a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal for his time serving with the 442nd Infantry Regiment in Europe.
Kikue and Tom moved to Santa Maria, California, for a short time then settled back in Detroit to work and raise their family. After retiring, they spent time in the Detroit area and Half Moon Bay, California, before a permanent move to Half Moon Bay to help with their grandchildren. Kik enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, word search and volunteering at the Senior Coastsiders in Half Moon Bay. She participated in exercise classes, line dancing and several long walks daily. She loved to cook and made many wonderful meals for friends and family. Kikue especially enjoyed traveling and went on many trips in the U.S. including an Alaskan cruise, trips to Europe and several trips to Japan. A special thank you to the Shimoura and Hane families for all the special treatment and care that Kikue received when traveling and visiting the D.C. area.
Kikue returned to Michigan in 2020, living in Waterford, but spent winters in Florida, Alabamaand California.
Her presence in our lives was a tremendous blessing, and she will be deeply missed. However, her memory will continue to live on through the love and joy she shared with her family and friends.
Kikue is survived by her daughters Debbi Horikawa Ostrom and Gail Horikawa, and her grandchildren Jesse Walker, Matthew Walker and Niki Horikawa. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Kikue was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom T. Horikawa, daughter Joyce Beckman, and son-in-law Charlie Ostrom. She was the last surviving sibling and sister to Wataru Jim Tagami, Hanako Kato, Ayako Konda, Yasuto Hirai, Tsuzuki Tom Tagami, Noboru Sam Tagami, Yoshinobu Jack Hirai, Suyeko Sue Hirase, Tsuyako Nakamura and George Hirai.
