Adrian, MI – City Administrator Greg Elliot has released a statement clarifying information on the recently-closed Adrian Inn in an effort to combat misinformation.
In 2022, after the evacuation of Riverview Terrace apartments in the City due to structural failures, the Adrian City Commission made the decision to purchase the Adrian Inn, which was then for sale, to allow the high-rise’s residents a temporary place to stay while seeking permanent housing.
Shortly after acquiring the motel, the City leased it to Housing Help of Lenawee for $1 per year, so that they could operate it on behalf of the former Riverview residents as a transitional housing facility.
The lease was for three years, two of which have elapsed.
Earlier this year, in light of the fact that Riverview Terrace has reopened and is accepting tenants, Housing Help approached the City about ending its lease and surrendering the premises.
According to Elliot, this decision was also influenced by deteriorating conditions at the building.
The lease surrender technically took place effective Thursday, December 5th.
Prior to that date, Housing Help gave a Notice to Quit to each person to whom it had leased a room.
Proceedings related to their eviction actions are still on-going, but as the Housing Assessment Resource Agency for the City, Housing Help is working with its former tenants to find other accommodations.
Elliot adds that the city was recently notified by Housing Help that a number of trespassers had broken into what should have been vacant rooms at the Inn.
The Adrian Police Department has cleared those rooms as of Thursday, December 19th, and the Department of Public Works secured the doors against reentry.
No information was included in the statement about the future of the building, and although the City Commission has floated ideas about a potential sale or demolition, they have not taken any official action as of yet.
