Jackson, MI – A domestic violence incident between two brothers turned deadly in Jackson County after a police chase. The incident, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office, took place at around 4:15pm Wednesday when Deputies were dispatched to investigate a domestic violence incident in the 500 block of Pentecost Highway in Franklin Township.
According to Deputies, a 34-year-old male and his 31-year-old brother were physically fighting when the 31-year-old allegedly produced a handgun and shot the 34-year-old in the hand. The 34-year-old male was taken to Hickman hospital by a different family member where his injuries were determined to be minor.
When law-enforcement officials from the City of Jackson Police Department approached the suspect vehicle, the Michigan State Police said that the suspect fled from the scene at a high rate of speed.
MSP says that the suspect fired a weapon at pursuing law enforcement. Several vehicles and homes were shot during the course of the pursuit. However, police say that at approximately 5:41 PM, a sergeant from the Jackson Police Department was shot by the suspect. As of Wednesday, he was listed in ‘good’ condition at Henry Ford Hospital.
Converging officers and deputies were able to stop the suspect. Multiple shots were fired during the attempt to apprehend him. During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot and incapacitated. MSP says that life-saving efforts were performed on scene, but the suspect was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital. Per department policy, both the deputy and officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending internal investigations.
Police said that they located numerous pipe bombs in the suspect vehicle. It is believed at this time by police that the suspect may have thrown some out of the vehicle during the pursuit. Detectives from the MSP Special Investigation Section out of Lansing have been requested to investigate the officer involved shooting. The suspect’s name is not being released, pending notification of next of kin.
