
Gregory John Lamley, 89, of Morenci, Mich., died October 1, 2024 at home, surrounded by family, with the assistance of Hospice of Lenawee. He was born August 8, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio, to Rody and Elsie (Liewert) Lamley. He was a 1953 graduate of Adrian High School where he was a three-sport-letter athlete. He then attended Michigan State University where he played baseball for two years, graduating in 1957. Greg was drafted in 1958 and served in the U.S. Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
He married Sandra (Dorchy) on June 9, 1959 in Redford Township, Mich. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2023.
Greg was hired by Morenci Area Schools and taught science for most of his career. He also coached football, basketball and baseball and served as athletic director. Highlights from his coaching years include leading the varsity baseball team to the league championship six years in a row from 1960 to 1965, winning 51 of 52 games. He was assistant coach when the Bulldog football team went to the playoffs in 1983. Greg taught drivers training to Morenci’s youth for many years. He retired in 1993 after 35 years of serving the district.
In addition to Morenci athletics, he was a loyal fan of Michigan State University football and basketball, Tiger baseball and the Detroit Lions. Greg and Sandy enjoyed winters in Florida where he was active in tennis and golf. They also traveled and camped. Greg enjoyed landscaping and gardening projects and was a driver of home delivered meals for Lenawee Department on Aging until July, 2024.
Greg is survived by a daughter Kym Ries of Morenci, sons Scott Lamley (and Corrie Storer) of Palm Bay, Fla., and Mark (and Erica) Lamley of Morenci; grandchildren Alison Hanks (and Carson Lucas) of Holland, Ohio, Adam Ries of Buchanan, Mich., Stefen (and Jillian) Lamley and Tatiana (and Justin) Breen of Springboro, Ohio, Destini Kruse of New Orleans, La., and Ty Kruse of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; great-grandchildren Cole, Callen and Camryn Lamley, Mia and Hank Breen and another great-grandchild due in 2025.
In addition to his wife Sandy, he was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws Harold and Ann Dorchy.
A memorial visitation for Greg will take place on Sunday, October 13 at Eagle Marry Funeral Home in Morenci from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be no memorial service. Memorial donations in Greg’s honor may be given to Hospice of Lenawee or a charity of the donor’s choice.
