Sophia DeLaCruz, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Toledo Medical Center. She was born on August 9, 1945, in Adrian, to the late Refugio Bill and Sofia (Cortinas) DeLaCruz.
Sophia was a strong single mother who raised her five children by herself. To support her family, Sophia worked for a few different places throughout her life. She worked for Children’s Protective Services, Healthy Moms Happy Babies, and Dial-A-Ride. Sophia was a devoted mother and grandmother. When she had free time, Sophia enjoyed playing bingo, testing her luck at the casino, crocheting baby blankets and stockings for her family, and watching anything on the Hallmark Channel.
To cherish her memory, Sophia leaves her children: Linda (Chuck) Garcia, Maria (Danielle) Guzman, and Ruby Guzman; 15 grandchildren: Vincent, Clemente, Joaquin, Roberto, Hano, Christopher, Gabriel, Andres, Rebecca, Juan, Courtney, Joshua, Kennedy, Jaylynn, and Santiago; 35 great grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Garcia and Susie DeLaCruz-Weichman; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Sophia was preceded in death by two children, Teresa Maldonado and Rudy Guzman; a brother, Rufus DeLaCruz Jr.; and two sisters, Andrea Flores and Christine DeLaCruz.
The family will receive friends for visitation at Anderson-Marry Funeral Home on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 2:00 to 8:00 pm with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Thomas Helfrich, OSFS, on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary Campus. Rite of Committal will follow in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park, Adrian.
