Doris Fay Burgess, age 93, of Adrian, Michigan, passed away Tuesday afternoon, September 24, 2024, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice of Lenawee.
Doris was born at home on November 21, 1930, in Madison County, Alabama, the youngest daughter of William and Annie Lou (Johnson) Kolle’s eight children. Doris grew up on the family farm and started picking cotton at a young age. On the weekends Doris would sell firewood that her daddy had chopped during the week. She developed a strong work ethic and never shied away from a challenging task.
In 1946, Doris moved from Alabama to Michigan and started working in the automotive industry on the assembly line. She retired from Stubnitz Greene after 32 years of dedication.
She is survived by her children, Ken Sr. (Penny) Sledge, Brenda Russell and Shirley (Bob) Sutphin; grandchildren, Ken Sledge, Jr., Rob Sledge, David Poore, Jennifer Randall and Dale Baughey; many wonderful great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hubert Burgess; daughter, Patricia Sledge; grandson, Chad Baughey; and her four brothers and three sisters.
Services are private and Doris will be laid to rest at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements have been entrusted to Wagley Funeral Home, Adrian.
