Nina May Pixley, age 88, passed away early Monday morning, September 9, 2024, at Gaslight Village surrounded by her family.
Nina was born on May 31, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Edward and May (LaPan) Carpenter. She graduated from Deerfield High School with the Class of 1954.
On July 17, 1954, Nina married her sweetheart, Harold L. “Pix” Pixley, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Deerfield, MI. Together they raised a family of four boys and stayed busy with the family farm. For many years, Nina and Pix traveled across the United States camping and spent their winters in Buttonwood Bay in Sebring Florida. They were blessed with over 61 years together before Pix’s death on April 29, 2016.
Nina was very talented and could do anything she put her mind to. In her earlier years, Nina worked as a cook at the Cherry Nook restaurant in Palmyra. She went on to work at Palmyra Upholstery for several years before deciding to start her own upholstery business out of the family home. Nina had many repeat customers coming to her for their furniture needs. She was a gifted quilter, and all her family and friends were fortunate to receive a personal quilt or wall hanging from her. Nina belonged to the quilting club in Adrian for many years, and each year the club would donate one of their quilts to a veteran in the area. Nina loved her Boston Terrier “fur buddies” that she had over the years. Nina’s faith was part of her everyday life; she attended Light of Christ Parish, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Blissfield and Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Adrian.
Nina is survived by her three sons: David (Kathy) of Palmyra, Steven (Cheryl) of Tecumseh, and Kenneth (Angie) of Romulus, MI; seven grandchildren: Rebecca (David) Brewer, David (Tammy) Pixley, Laura Fisher, Jennifer (James) Forgacs, Michael (Elizabeth) Pixley, Melissa and Jacob (Elizabeth) Pixley; eight great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson, with another one of the way. In addition to her husband, Pix, Nina was preceded in death by her son, Donald Pixley and infant granddaughter, Amanda Pixley.
Visitation for Nina will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel, in Blissfield, with a scripture service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the funeral home with Deacon Leonard Brown. Burial will follow at Palmyra Cemetery.
