Lenawee County Breaks Ground on $20 Million Expansion at Maurice Spear Campus

Madison Twp., Lenawee County – Lenawee County officials gathered Wednesday afternoon for a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation and expansion project at the Maurice Spear Campus. This $20 million dollar project will include 20 new beds, adding to the existing 66-bed facility, and an industrial commercial kitchen to be used by the Department on Aging. Maurice Spear Campus services in-county and out-of-county adjudicated youth.

Kim Murphy, Lenawee County Administrator (pictured above), expressed her enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This expansion of the Maurice Spear Campus is more than just an investment in infrastructure; it’s an investment in the future of our community. By enhancing our ability to serve both our youth and elderly populations, we are demonstrating Lenawee County’s commitment to providing essential services to those who need them most. Today’s groundbreaking is a symbol of our dedication to making Lenawee a place where everyone can thrive.”

Jim Van Doren, Chair of the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners (pictured above), also shared his thoughts on the project. “The Maurice Spear Campus has been a cornerstone of our community for decades, and this renovation and expansion will ensure it continues to meet the evolving needs of our residents. I am proud of the collaborative effort that has brought us to this point, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on the lives of so many in Lenawee County.”

The project, approved by the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners in August 2024, is expected to be completed by early 2026.

Here is the funding break-down for the project:

$16 million of American Rescue Plan Act dollars
$2.5 million from the Department on Aging (for construction of the commercial kitchen)
$1.5 million from the contingency division of the capital improvement fund

The ceremony included remarks from several key participants, followed by a symbolic groundbreaking with shovels. The event was attended by members of the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners, project partners, and community members.
