Madison Twp., MI – A 58-year-old Adrian man is in critical condition after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the utility pole and a gas station building early Tuesday morning.
The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office says that Deputies responded to the Lightning Quick Gas Station located at 1157 West Beecher Road in Madison Township for a vehicle that crashed into the building at 6:30am.
Sheriff Troy Bevier says that the driver was traveling north on Airport Road approaching Madison Street in a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer when he left the roadway and sideswiped a utility pole. The vehicle came back onto the roadway and made a left turn onto Madison Street, eventually stopping at the red light at Beecher Street. Upon making a right turn onto Beecher Street, the driver continued turning and drove into the parking lot of the Lightning Quick gas station accelerating out of control and striking the west side of the building.
Bevier says that both the vehicle and the gas station building sustained significant damage. Initial investigation indicated that the driver may have suffered a medical emergency. Life saving measures were performed by the Madison Township Fire Department and the man was transported to Hickman Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. There were no other passengers in the vehicle and it is unknown if drug/alcohol use were a factor. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, and the crash remains under investigation by the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Team.
This incident was assisted by the Madison Township Fire and Ambulance, Adrian Police Department and Michigan State Police.
