Lenawee County, MI – The Lenawee County Health Department (LCHD) is issuing an advisory for Hayes State Park beach due to high levels of E. coli bacteria.

Water samples collected on July 8th at Hayes State Park beach have shown E. coli bacteria levels exceeding the state’s safety threshold. Due to the 24-hour processing time for water tests, results were not available until today, leading to the advisory being issued on July 10th.

The water samples were collected as part of the LCHD’s routine testing and not due to any specific known issue or contamination event. This advisory is to inform the public and potential beachgoers that the current bacteria levels may pose health risks. Elevated bacteria levels can increase the likelihood of illness, particularly for children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Visitors should consider these factors when deciding whether to visit the beach or enter the water.

The cause of the elevated E. coli levels is currently unknown, but it may be attributed to the large goose population at the beach and the high number of visitors over the July 4th holiday weekend.

Follow-up water samples will be collected, and the advisory will remain in effect until results indicate that E. coli levels are back within the state’s safety criteria. Water samples were taken exclusively from the beach area and may not reflect bacteria levels in other parts of Wamplers Lake.
