Monroe County, MI – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a boat crash that occurred on Lake Erie in the Bolles Harbor channel late Thursday night. Sheriff Troy Goodnough reports that the crash happened at around 11:26pm, when several people called in to Central Dispatch saying that a boat was sinking, and that people were in the water.
Deputies and Fire-Rescue personnel arrived on scene and found a 62 year old Monroe man and his 38 year old son clinging to the rocks near the Hoffman Memorial Fishing Pier in Bolles Harbor. The subjects were pulled from the water by rescue personnel. Preliminary information reveals that they were operating a 1983 26 foot Chris-Craft boat. For unknown reasons the boat crashed into the seawall near channel marker #10 while attempting to enter the harbor.
The hull of the boat was ruptured and the boat partially sank in the channel. Both victims were transported to a Toledo hospital with critical injuries. The Sheriff’s Office says that speed and alcohol are factors in the crash.
