Adrian to Purchase Blighted N. Winter Street Properties, Apply for Grant to Demolish Buildings

Adrian, MI – The Adrian City Commission voted 6-0 to apply for a blight-remediation grant and to purchase blighted property on North Winter Street at their meeting Monday night. The addresses include the former Daily Telegram building along the riverfront side of North Winter Street. The City has a long-term plan to have that space developed with possible residential and commercial buildings.

The City will use $500,000 to buy the properties, and apply for a $500,000 blight-remediation grant to demolish the existing buildings. Jay Marks, Main Street Director for Adrian, told the Commission Monday night that there are only a couple of cities in Michigan higher on the priority list to receive the blight removal grant. The money to purchase the buildings and land will be taken from the $15 million that Adrian received as an enhancement grant from the State of Michigan in 2022. That money is to be used for blight removal projects, add new housing, and improve parks.

City Administrator Greg Elliott has said that when the State approved the money, they had pointed-out the stretch of North Winter Street along the River Raisin. Elliot told WLEN News Monday night that one of the city’s goals is to get the land to a point where it can be reused…
