Monroe, MI – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motorcycle versus passenger vehicle crash that took place Tuesday night. Sheriff Troy Goodnough is reporting that the crash occurred within the intersection of Telegraph Road and Mall Road, in Frenchtown Township just after 6pm.
Preliminary investigation reveals that 59-year-old Troy Wheatcraft of Port Charlotte, Florida, was operating a tan 2018 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Telegraph Road, in the right lane. As Wheatcraft entered the intersection, his motorcycle was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Trax operated by an 18-year-old Dundee resident, accompanied by a 48-year-old Newport resident in the front seat.
When the crash occurred, the Trax was making an eastbound turn into the Walmart parking lot from southbound Telegraph Road. At impact, the 2017 Chevrolet rotated, overturned, and came to rest on its roof. Wheatcraft fell from his motorcycle coming to rest within the intersection.
The Sheriff’s Office says that the motorcycle driver was not wearing a helmet. Both occupants in the Trax were wearing their seat belts. Wheatcraft was transported to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Both occupants in the Trax were taken to an area hospital, and are in serious condition.
Alcohol and speed are not factors in the crash. Contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office with any questions and tips.
