Adrian, MI – As temperatures rise into the 90s in many parts of the state…including Lenawee County, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is reminding animal owners on some of the best ways to keep them cool and safe.
Follow these tips:
* Provide unlimited cool, clean, fresh water
* Know an animal’s ability to tolerate heat. An animal’s age, breed, type of coat, and health history can all play a role in their ability to tolerate the heat.
* Test surfaces to make sure they won’t burn paws
* Avoid harmful algal blooms in bodies of water
* Do not leave animals in parked vehicles
* and make sure animals have a place to cool down
Following these tips can help keep your animals cool and comfortable through any heat wave. If there are any concerns about your animals’ health either now or throughout the summer months, talk to your veterinarian.
