Ottawa Lake, MI – The Environmental Protection Agency and Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy provided another update on the diesel spill at the Pilot gas station at US 223 and US 23 in Monroe County.

The EPA has been monitoring for any evidence of sheen and or odor at several natural spring locations near the site, and no impact from the spill have been found.

  • On-site concrete removal and gravel/soil excavation continues in the rear parking lot. Pilot is actively recovering contaminated oil/water mixture from excavation due to recently exposed drains.
  • De-watering of the on-site retention pond has started and is on-going until water levels are low enough for excavation to begin. Equipment is staged in preparation for the excavation and the dig is expected to begin next week.
  • The outfall behind Sunoco at North Tenmile Creek has been excavated and is awaiting restoration guidance from Eagle.
