Suspected Drunken Driver Kills Young Siblings Attending Birthday Party in Monroe County

Berlin Twp., Monroe County – A young child’s birthday quickly became a tragedy Saturday afternoon in Monroe County. Sheriff Troy Goodnough is reporting on Saturday, April 20th, at approximately 3 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to 6332 Brancheau Rd in Berlin Township, regarding a motor vehicle that struck a building at the Swan Boat Club. The vehicle struck the north wall of the facility, entered the building and came to rest approximately 25 feet inside the building, where a young child’s birthday party was being held.

Upon arrival, first-aid was provided to approximately 15 victims, which included adults and young children. 9 of those victims were transported by ambulance and/or medical helicopters to local hospitals with serious injuries. A total of 3 children and 6 adults were transported. Several others were transported by private citizens for medical treatment.

Unfortunately 2 of the victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. This includes an 8 year old female and a 5 year old male, who are siblings. The driver of the vehicle, a 66 year old female, who was not identified Saturday, was taken into police custody and lodged for operating while intoxicated causing death. Additional criminal charges will likely be brought against the driver as the investigation proceeds.

The scene was described as “extremely chaotic.” Assisting on scene were members of the: Berlin Twp. Fire Department, Frenchtown Twp. Fire Department, Monroe Twp. Fire Department, Rockwood Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance and Huron Valley Ambulance, The University of Michigan-Survival Flight Team.

This investigation remains active with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office – Traffic Services Unit, Detective Bureau, Youth Services, Evidence Technician Team, DRONE Team and Chaplin Service assisting on scene.

Also assisting are members of the Monroe Public Safety Department’s -Accident Investigation Team, Detective Bureau and Chaplin Service along with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office – Accident Investigation Team and the Michigan State Police.
