County Commissioners Proclaim February as Black History Month in Lenawee

Adrian, MI – The Lenawee County Board of Commissioners proclaimed February, 2024 as Black History Month in Lenawee County. Here was the proclamation read during their regular meeting Wednesday:

“WHEREAS, Black History Month is a time-honored tradition that recognizes and celebrates the invaluable contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans in our nation and local community and that ethnic and racial diversity enriches and strengthens both overall; and

WHEREAS, Lenawee County has a strong history of recognizing the importance of African Americans in our community and led our state and nation in the battle against slavery, with our residents leading abolition efforts and providing freedom and emancipation for enslaved people; and

WHEREAS, acknowledging the diverse heritage and cultural richness within Lenawee County enhances our collective understanding, unity, and appreciation for the individuals and events that have shaped our shared history; and

WHEREAS, this annual observance provides an opportunity for reflection on the struggles, triumphs, and significant impact of African Americans throughout history, promoting awareness and fostering a deeper understanding of our shared humanity;

THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim February 2024 as Black History Month in Lenawee County, and urges all residents, schools, businesses, and community organizations to join in recognizing and celebrating the contributions of African Americans to our community and to our nation.

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that during this month, we encourage educational institutions and community organizations to organize events, programs, and activities that honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans, fostering a spirit of inclusion and unity.”

The proclamation was given to Lenawee County NAACP Chapter President Jeanette Henagan.
