12-Year-Old Boy Rescued from Icy Pond in Dundee

Dundee, MI – A 12-year-old was rescued from an icy pond near the Dundee Cabelas pond Tuesday morning. Emergency Crews began arriving within 3 minutes of the call to 9-1-1 and observed a subject, later identified as a 12 year-old Dundee boy, in the middle of the pond struggling to stay afloat in the 20 foot water.

Dundee Commercial Motor Vehicle Officer Joe Schumaker grabbed personal floatation equipment and began to make his way out to the victim. While doing so, Officer Schumaker also fell through the ice but continued wading out to complete the rescue. Officer Schumaker was joined by two men, Paxton Barnes and Garrett Desbrough of Dundee, and Dundee Officer Chrissy Hicks, Deputy Jeremy Lestock of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office as well as Dundee firefighters who assisted with a line from shore to help bring them safely back to shore.

Once out of the water, the victim was treated by Emergency Medical Services Personnel on scene and was transported to Toledo Hospital for additional treatment. Officer Schumaker was treated on scene and returned to duty.

The Dundee Police recognized the 911 caller, Jonathon Garza from Clinton Township. He is at truck driver for Hungry Howie’s and was making a delivery to the store immediately after the boy fell through the ice. He heard the boy screaming for help and called 9-1-1.

Dundee Police were assisted by the Dundee Fire Department, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office – Michigan, Michigan State Police and MCA Ambulance.
