Monroe, MI – Sheriff Troy Goodnough is alerting the public to a telephone scam, taking advantage of people within the community.
Earlier this week, several citizens contacted the Sheriff’s Office reporting that they received a phone call from an individual claiming to be a member of law enforcement. The scammer then proceeded to say that he or she either has warrants for their arrest or has missed appearing in court.
The scammer instills fear of immediate arrest if compliance is not met and demands payment by various bill payment options. The scammers provide a barcode that is sent through text message for the person to send payment. When received, the bar code appears legitimate however, it is fraudulent.
These scammers have also attempted to collect payment using gift cards and other forms of electronic cash transfer applications.
Sheriff Goodnough reminds residents that no law enforcement agency will call citizens and demand money or face arrest for any reason. If you encounter this situation contact your local police department or sheriff’s office.
