Dundee, MI – Charges have been filed against a man who police say posed as a member of the Dundee Police Department and lied to an elderly Monroe County resident on the phone…saying that he grandson was involved in a fatal traffic crash, and needed bail money.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said that the subject identified himself as ‘James Marcus’ with the Dundee Police Department. The subject told the victim her grandson was involved in a fatal traffic crash, had been arrested and needed bail money.

Confused by the situation, the victim went to the bank and withdrew money to bail her grandson out of jail.

A suspect later arrived at the victim’s residence and collected the ‘bail money.’ The suspect was captured on a Ring Doorbell camera. A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective, with assistance from the public, was able to identify the suspect. The Detective presented the case to the Monroe County Prosecutor, who authorized an arrest warrant for Juan Romero from Berwyn, Illinois.

The two-count arrest warrant is for False Pretenses $1,000 or more but less than $20,000 and Embezzlement From a vulnerable adult $1,000 or more but less than $20,000.

Anyone with information on the case or on the whereabouts of Juan Romero is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
