Tecumseh, MI – The Tecumseh City Council has an agenda item for their Monday Study Session to potentially amend the current trash and recycling contract with Stevens Disposal.

Stevens has asked if the City would be willing to consider an amendment to the current contract to go to a 100% cart based model for the city’s residential services contract. Currently, residents have the option to use carts. Stevens says that the primary reasons for this request are: changes in the hauling equipment and operating procedures that are transitioning to an automated model that require the carts. As Stevens updates their equipment, they are only ordering trucks with automated hydraulic arms. They are also building a staffing model that eliminates the assistant that typically rides on the back of the trucks.

Stevens has indicated that they will be continuing to transition their equipment and operating procedures, and they will only offer cart service in future contracts. Tecumseh’s currently contract expires in 2026.

The City of Tecumseh reports that approximately 50% of their households have requested a trash cart (1,400 trash carts for 3,000 households). If the amendment is approved, then there will be a $0.50 charge per household/per month for the trash carts. City Manager Dan Swallow, in documents presented to Councilmembers, said that there will be an additional $750/month for trash carts.

Their study session will take place Monday, October 16th at 6:30pm at City Hall.
