Adrian, MI – The Adrian Symphony Orchestra presents The Firebird on Sunday, October 8th at 3:00 PM at Dawson Auditorium on the Adrian College campus. This concert begins the ASO’s 2023 – 2024 season.

ASO Music Director and Conductor Bruce Anthony Kiesling comments, “Our concert begins with one of the most audience-grabbing overtures: Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmilla overture. It is from an opera that is rarely performed; however, the overture has become famous for its quick tempo and joyous atmosphere!

Bernstein’s Serenade is inspired by a famous painting by Anselm Feuerbach titled Plato’s Symposium. The painting depicts many early philosophers and great minds, such as Socrates and Alcibiades, debating and expressing their views on love, life, and the world. In Bernstein’s attempts to capture these ideas on existence and human experience, he creates the beautiful and heady Serenade. The ever-evolving dialogue of these ideas is illustrated between the violin soloist Danielle Belen and the string orchestra, percussionists, and harp.

Lastly, the Firebird Suite tells the epic folk story based on the Russian Legend of a beautiful creature whose feathers grant wishes. In this adventure, Kastchei, the antagonist, steals the princess away, turning the knights who try to save her to stone. Thus begins the journey of the crown prince Ivan to save the princess, who enlists the help of the mystical firebird with its beautiful, magical feathers. This piece includes something for everyone and is sure to keep listeners enchanted.”

With an emphasis on making music accessible to the community, the ASO will have “Classical Conversations” with Music Director Bruce Kiesling, where he shares the stories behind the music to be performed. This talk will take place in the auditorium at 2:10 PM and is available to all concert ticket holders. A cash bar will also be available in the lobby from 2:00 PM through intermission and after the concert.
