Morenci, MI – A two-hour closed session Thursday night at the Morenci City Chambers resulted in the demotion of Police Chief Don Thompson.

He was placed under administrative suspension earlier this week, and the City Council set Thursday as the day to take further action.

At the conclusion of the closed session…which was at the request of Thompson…two motions died on the floor: the first one was to reinstate him as Chief, and require going HR and communication training. The second motion was to terminate his employment with the City of Morenci.

With both of those motions receiving no support, a third motion was presented: to remove him from suspension, to demote him to road patrol officer, and make him take HR and communication training. That measure passed 6-1.

Morenci Mayor Sean Seger talked to WLEN News after the decision…

Officer Don Thompson told WLEN News that: “I’m glad I’m working with the City.” Mike Creswell, the current Assistant Chief and former Morenci Police Chief, will become acting Chief.
