Mining Ordinances Approved by Cambridge Township Board

Onsted, MI – The Cambridge Township Board of Trustees approved two mining-related ordinances at their special meeting Thursday night.

They have been working for about 8 months on this process, since putting a mining moratorium in place in late 2022. There was an application filed for a sand and gravel mining project at US-12 and Killarney Highway, which was put on hold because of the moratorium.

The mining company has sued the Township in Lenawee County Court…with a tentative hearing date in the near future. Legal counsel for the Cambridge Township Board has said that the ordinances on the books back in 2022 were outdated, and on Thursday said that they should take action on the current proposed changes to put something on the books.

The citizen-led group Protect Irish Hills has been very vocal about their opposition to a mining operation at that location, showing-up at meetings and suggesting the addition of many provisions to the ordinances.

Even with all the work done by those residents, lawyers, and the Township Board…a decision on what rules the mining company must follow could come down to a decision in Lenawee County Court.

Should the company be able to file for a permit under the ‘old rules’, or must they follow the newly-adopted ordinance? Stay tuned in to WLEN for the latest.
