Adrian, MI – The ordinance amendment that would eliminate the City of Adrian Human Relations Commission is on the agenda for tonight’s meeting.

Many members of the City Commission have come forward either supporting the HRC or advocating for it to be disbanded.

The Human Relations Commission was revitalized in 2018. Over the course of the last several months, a subcommittee has been working to re-write the ordinances pertaining to the HRC, in order to give them a better direction as to what their role is as a commission.

Some City Commissioners said during recent public meetings that it has been a challenge working with members of the HRC, and that the work done by the group could be taken care of by NGO’s … non governmental organizations.

There has been public outcry about the City Commission moving forward with eliminating the HRC, with some saying they don’t feel safe in Adrian and that the HRC was a way for them to make their voices heard in City Hall. Many public comments were made by members of the LGBTQ-plus community.

The City Commission has their meeting tonight at 7pm at the Chambers building on East Maumee Street in Downtown Adrian.
