Onsted, MI – The Cambridge Township Board of Trustees have extended a moratorium on mining, which has been in place since late 2022.

The decision was unanimous at Wednesday’s meeting. Trustees put the initial moratorium in place so they could update their outdated ordinances with respect to mining operations.

There were applications submitted by a private company to put a gravel operation off of US-12 near Killarney Highway…which would become a lake after about 10 years of mining. There has been heavy push back by residents in the area…citing environmental concerns, increased traffic and noise, and decreased property values.

SSP Leasing LLC has sued the Township in Lenawee County Court. They believe that their permit application should be approved based on the ordinances at the time they applied. There was a pretrial hearing scheduled for this week, but it has been pushed back to the middle of September in the Courtroom of Circuit Court Judge Anna Marie Anzalone.

Three proposed bills in the Michigan House that would have given the State control over mining permits, as opposed to leaving control to local municipalities, have stalled in Lansing. The moratorium is now in place until the end of August.
