Petersburg, MI – The Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department released more information on the large structure fire at Steven’s Disposal and Recycling that happened Saturday night.
A post on social media said that multiple departments responded at around 9:10pm to the initial call. Deerfield, Dundee and Ottawa Lake Fire Departments assisted Summerfield.
While enroute, a large column of heavy black smoke was seen for miles and the response was quickly upgraded to a 2nd and 3rd alarm. First arriving units discovered a 100-by-100 transfer station building fully involved with several exposures nearby.
Although hydrants were available in front of the facility, it wasn’t enough to keep up with the water flow that was necessary to fight the fire. Three additional water sites were established: Herkimer pond east of the scene, Dixon and Wells Road, and M50 in front of the Toyota Dealership in Dundee.
Summerfield Township Volunteer Fire Department also thanked the following departments for their assistance: Ida, Whiteford, Erie Township, Milan, LMR, Exeter, Adrian City Chief Aric Massingill, Ridgeway Township, Raisin Township, Riga, Saline, Pittsfield, Luna Pier, Monroe Township, and LaSalle.
Local farmer Michael Iott also voluntarily responded with a semi truck that had approximately 6,800 gallons of water on standby in case it was needed. Firefighters left the scene at around 5am Sunday.
No injuries to any firefighters or civilians during this incident. The cause of the fire at Steven’s Disposal and Recycling was not released.
