Abolitionist with Lenawee County Ties to be Honored at Michigan House of Representatives Tomorrow

Adrian, MI – Adrian Noon Rotary Club has announced that abolitionist Laura Smith Haviland is receiving a resolution and tribute from the Michigan House of Representatives on March 21st.

Laura and her family moved from New York in 1829 to Lenawee County in the then-Michigan Territory.

The State House is honoring her work as being an abolitionist and opening the first integrated school in Michigan in 1837, called the Raisin Institute. She was very involved with the Underground Railroad during the 1830s and her home became the first Underground Railroad station in Michigan.

Her Great, great, great, great, great, nephew Charles Haviland, from Hillsdale, will be on the house floor with the President of the Adrian Noon Rotary, Charles Moore Jr., and State Representative Dale Zorn, to receive the resolution.
