Adrian, MI – The play ‘Men on Boats’ will hit the Croswell Opera House stage for two weekends, beginning this Saturday night.
The events depicted in the play took place more than 150 years ago, but the play reimagines them with a modern sensibility.
‘Men on Boats,’ grew from the playwright becoming fascinated with geologist John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition to the Grand Canyon. As she started to work on turning the story into a play, she realized how much she herself would enjoy portraying characters like those adventurers.
The result was a play in which the 10 men are intended to be played by women, nonbinary people, transgender people — anyone who doesn’t match the identity of the historical characters.
The Croswell’s stage has been transformed into a canyon, with the walls of the deep gulch rising the entire height of the proscenium.
‘Men on Boats’ has five performances, this weekend and next. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday shows are at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets may be ordered online at croswell.org or by calling 517-264-7469.
