Cambridge Twp. Trustees Enter into Contract with Consulting Firm for Quarry-Extraction Ordinance Changes

Onsted, MI – Residents of Cambridge Township have been showing their displeasure towards a proposed gravel pit being dug off of US-12 near Killarney Highway…and about 25 people were at a recent meeting to hear the latest on the process.

The proposed pit by a private land-owner would be in operation for about 10 years, and would become a man-made lake, with homes to be built around it. Cambridge Township Trustees voted back in December to put a 6-month moratorium on quarry-extraction use permits.

At the recent regular meeting of the board, the Township’s legal council…Castleberry & Lucas… recommended that they enter into a contract with Carlisle Wortman. This group specializes in ordinance adjustments for quarry-extractions, and are highly regarded, according to Fred Lucas. The Township agreed to the deal.

In a conversation after the meeting, Lucas talked to WLEN News about how this contract could impact the current 6-month moratorium…which is nearly two months in.

He said that if Carlisle Wortman completes their work, and the Cambridge Township Planning Commission reviews and approves it, then the new ordinance could be before the Board of Trustees before the 6-month moratorium.

If the Trustees agree upon the changes, then applications for quarry-extraction use permits could be reviewed and either approved or denied.
