Adrian, MI – The origin story of Peter Pan will hit the Croswell Opera House stage this weekend. “Peter and the Starcatcher” tells the story of the orphan boy with no name become the legend known as Peter Pan.
The play is based on the children’s novel “Peter and the Starcatchers” by humorist Dave Barry and author Ridley Pearson.
At the center of the story are an orphan known only as Boy, played by Ben Bascuk of Waterville, Ohio, and Molly, an apprentice Starcatcher played by Kylie McElrath of Clinton. Molly’s job is to protect a mystical substance known as “starstuff” whenever it falls to earth.
As the story begins, the characters are setting sail from England aboard two ships. The Wasp carries Molly’s father, Lord Aster, on an important mission for the queen. The Neverland carries Molly, the Boy, two more orphans, and Molly’s nanny Mrs. Bumbrake. Each also carries a trunk, one holding precious cargo belonging to the queen, and one a mere decoy.
Reed Schwieterman of Maumee, Ohio, and Gage Sterling of Adrian play the orphans Prentiss and Ted. Conner Raymond of Adrian is Bill Slank, captain of the Neverland.
Eric Stone of Adrian plays Lord Aster and Meg McNamee of Tecumseh is Mrs. Bumbrake. Luke Gorsuch of Jackson plays the captain of the Wasp, with Peter Crist and Terry Hissong, both of Adrian, as Black Stache and Smee, two pirates who hijack his ship. Aaron Treadway of Clinton is Alf, a sailor.
In the ensemble are Virginia Atkinson, Molly Humphries and Kai Mattoon, all of Adrian, and Ella Flumignan of Onsted.
The director is Julianne Dolan, the choreographer is Dean Shullick, and the music director is Todd Schreiber. The task of transforming the 15 actors into more than 100 characters falls to costume designer Alexandria Szczotka. Scenic and lighting design is by Crosby Slupe and sound is by Chris Goosman.
