Morenci, MI – A wild scene near Munson Highway and Ridgeville Road north of Morenci led to a fiery crash, a Sheriff’s Deputy being treated for a medical emergency, and someone being life flighted for serious injuries.

On Thursday morning, at around 8:30, a Lenawee County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a vehicle with improper plates. It was discovered that both the driver and passenger had numerous outstanding felony warrants for their arrest from multiple jurisdictions. The driver of the vehicle ran from the traffic stop on foot into the woods…and is still at large.

The passenger in the vehicle initially gave the deputy a false ID. When the deputy correctly identified the passenger, a white male from the Munson area, he jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away from the scene eastbound through a field and then onto Ridgeville Road.

The Deputy attempted to follow the vehicle but could not get close enough to it, due to dust from the roadway. The suspect vehicle struck another vehicle in the roadway, lost control and flipped into a riverbank. The vehicle then caught on fire with the driver trapped inside. The Sheriff’s Deputy, along with Chief Thompson of the Morenci Police Department, pulled the driver out of the burning vehicle and moved him to safety.

Once away from the vehicle, the Deputy began to experience a medical emergency and had to be taken from the scene by life flight for evaluation. The driver was taken from the scene by ProMedica air ambulance for serious injuries.

The Deputy is listed in Stable condition at this time and is expected to make a full recovery. The driver of the vehicle is listed in stable condition as well. The occupants of the vehicle struck by the suspect are uninjured.

A report will be submitted to the Lenawee County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete seeking charges on the driver.
