Hillsdale County, MI – Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers are investigating a fatal boating incident in Hillsdale County involving an 11-year-old girl.
The incident occurred Wednesday on Lake Michindoh. A lifeguard from the conference center was operating a boat that was pulling 12 children on an inflatable tube.
A second adult was also on the boat, watching the children as a ‘spotter.’ All the children were wearing life jackets and helmets.
Three children fell from the tube and into the water. When the operator returned to pick-up the children, the vessel struck a fourth child, an 11-year-old girl, not previously seen in the water.
The child was immediately transported to the dock and was met by emergency responders. She was rushed by ambulance to Hillsdale County Hospital, where she later died.
Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor, and conditions were favorable for boating. The boat operator is cooperating with the investigation.
