Tecumseh, MI – Tecumseh High School Principal Dennis Niles has been reassigned to the position of Director of Operations at Tecumseh Public Schools (TPS) after an internal investigation.
Mr. Niles was the principal of Tecumseh High School from November 2020 to this past May. A release by the district Monday said that the move comes as Mr. Niles was placed on paid, non-disciplinary leave following an internal investigation into misconduct allegations that began in late May.
On May 27, the Tecumseh Police Department determined that Mr. Niles did not commit criminal misbehavior against any student and the investigation was handed over to TPS. The internal investigation was led by the Human Resources department at TPS with the assistance of the District’s law firm.
The District found Mr. Niles’ conduct to be less than professional and he has faced the appropriate disciplinary action, per TPS policy.
Following the outcome of this investigation, the Board of Education and Superintendent Rick Hilderley felt a change was necessary at Tecumseh High School.
“Although it was determined Mr. Niles did not break any laws, his conduct did not meet my expectations or the District’s standards for professionalism,” said Superintendent Hilderley. “It’s important that our students are not subjected to something that may make them feel uncomfortable.”
Mr. Niles will now undergo retraining in appropriate and professional conduct.
“Going into the new school year, the District will strongly reiterate the conduct and ethics policies to our staff set forth by the Board of Education,” said Superintendent Hilderley.
With the title of Director of Operations, Mr. Niles will oversee the maintenance, custodial, and technology departments. He will also oversee the operations for Tecumseh Community Pool.
The search for a new high school principal is immediately underway. Greg Dolson will remain Assistant Principal at THS and head football coach of the varsity football team.
