Tecumseh, MI – Tecumseh Public Schools will place two bond proposals on the November 8th, 2022 General Election Ballot.
The District has held several public meetings and sent out a survey to the community about the previous proposal which failed in May, and TPS leaders have gone back to the drawing board to create two bond proposals.
According to a news release by the district, during a special meeting on Monday, the Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted to place the two proposals on the November 8 ballot.
Proposal 1 – $62,000,000 – 7 mills (3.4 mills added to the existing 3.6 mills)
* A new 135,000 square foot elementary building on the site of Tecumseh Acres Early Learning Center
* Security entry additions would be made to Tecumseh High School and Tecumseh Middle School at the front entrances
* A music classroom addition would be built at the high school. Elizabeth R. Wilson Foundation has collected more than $500,000 from the Friends of Tecumseh Schools Orchestra to put toward the new music addition
Proposal 2 – $26,500,000 – 5.15 mills (1.55 mills added to the existing 3.6 mills)
*A 10,000 square foot auxiliary gym at THS
* Site improvements (including traffic flow changes, parking lot relocations and other safety improvements) at TMS
* TMS interior infrastructure improvements to security cameras, electrical and plumbing
* Pool repairs and improvements to locker rooms, fixtures, plumbing, air quality and boilers
“Strong emphasis was placed on the feedback received these last few weeks in redeveloping the proposals,” said Superintendent Rick Hilderley. “TPS must address the critical facility needs or face a financial crisis. I am happy with the efforts made to include community input to make this work.”
The Board of Education has identified $18,000,000 worth of needed upgrades in the near future. The Board will have to address much of those upgrades through the general fund, which would cut into the District’s budget. Much of the updates would be taken care of through the bond program if one or both proposals pass.
TPS will take these plans to the Michigan Department of Treasury for approval in early July.
