Sam Skeels Selected as Next Adrian High School Principal, Pending Board Approval

Adrian, MI – The Lincoln Elementary School (Adrian) Principal is going to the Adrian Board of Education for final approval to become Adrian High School’s new principal.

The Interview Selection Committee consisting of parents, staff, and administrators have recommended Sam Skeels for the position. The school board will consider final approval at its Monday, May 9th meeting. Upon approval, Skeels will replace AHS Principal Mike Perez, who is retiring from the district effective June 30th after 33 years of service. He will assume the new role on July 1, 2022.

“As a former Maple, and the parent of current Maples, I am very excited to see Sam’s leadership at Adrian High School,” said Bryan Howard, a Selection Committee member and AHS graduate. “Sam’s positive energy, drive, and desire to lead the High School was demonstrated throughout the interview process including a detailed transition plan that I believe will lead to success”.

Dr. Michael Ballard, Adrian Board of Education member, stated: “Not only is Sam a lifelong Maple, but he also has the talent, training, and experience to take Adrian High School to the next level.”

High School Spanish Teacher Stasi Soto added, “Throughout the hiring process, we were impressed with Mr. Skeels’ ability to articulate and communicate his vision. The staff is eager to welcome him to AHS and look forward to partnering with him to create amazing opportunities for students”.

Superintendent Nate Parker echoed the sentiments of the committee. “Sam Skeels is an excellent selection for this position. He has demonstrated his passion for Adrian Public Schools with outstanding service as an elementary principal, but more importantly, through the hiring process exhibited that without question he is the best person for the job. Sam went through this process with thoroughness and thoughtfulness that set him apart. I am excited to see the amazing things he will do for our students and community.”

“I’m eager to work collaboratively with the dedicated staff of the High School to ensure pathways to college and careers for every Adrian High School student,” Skeels said. “I’m honored to be asked to serve in such a remarkable, generous, and supportive community.”

Skeels was previously an Assistant Principal at Springbrook Middle School and a physical education teacher for Adrian Public Schools.

Skeels resides in Adrian with his wife Sally, who is a special education teacher, and three children that attend APS. He holds a specialist’s degree in educational leadership from Siena Heights University.
